A few Google Wave tips to get started

November 7, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

1) Find a Google Wave invite.  Go to: http://twitter.com/#search?q=google%20wave%20invite and find a real person who is giving out invites and ask!  Do not pay! Do not ask from something that looks like a SPAM or form-letter.  Do not ask Google directly (maybe someday, but right now they only give them through existing wave users)

2) Search all public waves: with:public  (And add a keyword if you want to refine this like with:public iphonedev )

3) Make a Wave Public.  To make a wave public, right now the easiest work-around is to add this address to your contacts: easypublic@appspot.com then add this user to your wave.

4) Click in a Wave and then press control-E to edit that wave.

5) To get it to work on an iPhone type in this link: (Don’t buy the $.99 app it is just a browser with below link!)

wave.google.com/wave/?nouacheck

6) Add derekbeda to your contacts.  Especially if you are into iPhone Development or a fellow Entrepreneur.

My top iPhone applications

October 4, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Going out:

Fandango – Even if I don’t always buy my tickets here, still use it for showtimes.

Shazam – If I hear a song and I want to know the name.  This app works all the time except a rare new custom mix.

Night Camera – If I am at a club or place that is dark and the normal iPhone camera can’t take a picture.  This sometimes can take a pic which is great and better than totally missing the shot.

Social Networking:

Tweetie – Best Twitter client on the iPhone.  I do download and checkout with most new twitter clients, but none have replaced this one yet.

Beejive IM – I do not spend much time in AIM or Yahoo, but when I do, this is the best app.  Keeps me logged in when I quit the app.

Loopt – This is the first app that shares my location with friends which is really the only reason it is popular.

Facebook

LinkedIn

Work/Productivity:

iDisk – Love my MobileMe account.

GoodReader – The best PDF reader. Zoom uo to 500% which is cool! Can access MobileMe iDisk.

Aaedvark – Ask a question, someone in Aardvark land will have an answer or opinion.

Woot – Love this place, although Most the stuff I buy I really can live without.

Entertainment:
PBS Radio

TED Talks

Games:

Vampires Live – I only check it 1 or 2 times a day now.  Level 50. Mostly runs itself.

Pocket God – Cool name.  Don’t really play it too much.

Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port

June 27, 2007 by derek · Leave a Comment

Michael Port in Book Yourself Solid delivers a fantastic guide for anyone in business that wants to have a solid, reliable business. This book is particularly useful for people in sales and in the consulting business. From the very beginning of the book he describes the foundation necessary to build a successful practice and “Book Yourself Solid”.

  1. “Choose your ideal clients so you work only with people who inspire and energize you.” This idea goes counter to the shotgun approach. I have used this “sniper” approach and it has work well for my business.
  2. “Understand why people buy what you are selling” In other words do your homework. Many businesspeople assume they know the triggers that motivate their customers to purchase their product and as a result mismanage marketing dollars and never achieve excellence.
  3. “Develop a personal brand so you’re memorable and unique.”
  4. “Talk about what you do without sounding confusing or bland.” Be specific so that people can immediately ascertain whether or not they can use your services.

Michael Port covers how to get referrals, how to network effectively and how to write and speak with high impact. The chapter on the sales cycle is worth rereading.I am sure small businesses will greatly benefit from this book and find it a productive investment of their time, as well.Enjoy!

Even today, Cluetrain Menifesto is still a very important business book and when it was written, it was ahead of it’s time.It has 95 Theses. A few favorites include:Markets are conversations.Markets consist of human beings, not demographic sectors.Elvis said it best: “We can’t go on together with suspicious minds.”Companies that do not belong to a community of discourse will die. You’re too busy “doing business” to answer our email? Oh gosh, sorry, gee, we’ll come back later. Maybe. You want us to pay? We want you to pay attention.Don’t worry, you can still make money. That is, as long as it’s not the only thing on your mind.We are waking up and linking to each other. We are watching. But we are not waiting. The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual @ Amazon.By Christopher Locke, Rick Levine, Doc Searls, David Weinberger. Available at Amazon
